Compliment one person, daily

Each day, give one specific compliment to one person. Specific, in person, and for something they actually did.

Plan a cycle

Run a 30-day cycle with compliment one person, daily.

The Cycle Planner walks you through six steps and gives you a clean plan to start from. We'll prefill the habit, the suggested length, and a starter exit condition.

Plan a cycle with this habit

The kin habit to morning gratitude and the daily thanks text. One specific compliment, given in person, for something the other person actually did. Not “you look great”, “the way you handled that meeting was deft, especially the moment you brought everyone back to the question.”

What it looks like

Once a day, give a compliment that meets three tests:

  • Specific: names the thing, not the person generally.
  • True: actually noticed and actually meant.
  • For something they did, not something they are.

The compliment can be delivered in person, by message, or in passing. Three sentences is plenty; one good sentence is sometimes better.

Why it works

Specific compliments land differently from generic ones. “You’re brilliant” is dismissable; “the way you re-framed that question made the whole meeting more useful” is not. The receiver knows you actually saw what happened, which makes the compliment hard to deflect.

The compounding effect is on attention. To give a real compliment daily, you have to look. Across thirty days of looking, you’ll notice the small competences of people you’d otherwise barely register. That noticing is the under-recognised gift in this practice.

Common pitfalls

The first pitfall is going to the same three people. Spread it. The receptionist, the colleague you barely talk to, the partner of a friend, the barista you’ve never named.

The second is fishing for reciprocity. The compliment is a one-way action. Don’t make it transactional.

The third is letting it become formulaic. The same shape every day reads as auto-generated. Vary the specifics; let the day produce what it produces.

A 30-day cycle suggestion

Thirty days, daily. Success criteria: 25 of 30 days, one specific compliment given.

Exit condition: when noticing what to compliment is reflexive, and at least one compliment per cycle has visibly mattered to the person who received it.
