News twice a day

Read the news twice. Once mid-morning, once early evening. Otherwise, the news doesn't get attention.

Focus 5–15 min Anytime Daily Moderate

Plan a cycle

Run a 30-day cycle with news twice a day.

The Cycle Planner walks you through six steps and gives you a clean plan to start from. We'll prefill the habit, the suggested length, and a starter exit condition.

Plan a cycle with this habit

The natural state of news consumption is constant. A push notification here, a glance at the headlines there, a checked feed every time the day produces a slow moment. Two slots a day is the disciplined alternative: enough to stay informed, structured enough not to bleed into the rest of life.

What it looks like

Two slots, fifteen minutes each. A typical pair: 10am, after the morning’s first task is done. 6pm, between work and dinner. The slots can be at any time as long as they’re consistent and outside the focus blocks of the day.

In each slot, read deliberately. A trusted source, opened on purpose, read for the period and closed. Push notifications stay off all day. The newsapp icon comes off the home screen.

Why it works

The cost of news isn’t the time spent reading. It’s the cumulative attention spent on the dozens of micro-checks that pull focus from whatever else is happening. Two slots a day captures the same informational benefit (probably more, because the attention is concentrated) at a fraction of the attention cost.

The discipline also surfaces something useful: how much you actually need the news. Most people who run this for thirty days find that the urge to check between slots fades within a week, which is usually a sign that the previous urge was anxious, not informational.

Common pitfalls

The first pitfall is keeping push notifications on. Notifications are the practice’s enemy. Turn them off completely; you can’t trust yourself to ignore them otherwise.

The second is replacing news-checking with social media. The two share a wiring. Cutting one and ramping the other defeats the purpose.

The third is letting the slots expand. Fifteen minutes twice a day is the floor and the ceiling. Forty-five minutes twice a day is a different habit, and a worse one.

A 30-day cycle suggestion

Thirty days, daily. Success criteria: 25 of 30 days, only the two slots used.

Exit condition: when the urge to check between slots has faded and you feel as informed as you want to be.
