Monthly app declutter
Once a month, delete the apps you haven't used in 30 days. Hide the rest behind the search bar.

Run a 30-day cycle with monthly app declutter.
The Cycle Planner walks you through six steps and gives you a clean plan to start from. We'll prefill the habit, the suggested length, and a starter exit condition.
Plan a cycle with this habit
Phones accumulate apps. Most home screens have ten apps in regular use and forty more sitting in folders, generating notifications, occasionally pulling attention. The monthly declutter is the cheapest available intervention: ten minutes once a month, scoped strictly.
What it looks like
On the first of the month, open the screen-time report. Find every app that has zero usage across the last 30 days. Delete them.
For apps that have some usage but aren’t earning their place on the home screen, move them to the back. Or better, delete them and use the search bar to launch when needed. Search-launching is the underused friction tool: an app you have to type four letters for is an app you use deliberately, not by reflex.
Why it works
Visual clutter on a phone is a low-grade attention drag. Each unused icon is a tiny choice you’re making and unmaking dozens of times a day. Removing them clears the home screen and the small attention cost that came with each one.
The deeper effect is on default app use. Apps that are one tap away get used reflexively; apps that require search get used deliberately. Moving apps from the home screen to search reduces reflex use by a meaningful margin without removing the app entirely.
Common pitfalls
The first pitfall is keeping apps for “just in case.” If you haven’t opened it in 30 days, you can re-download it in 30 seconds the next time you need it. Most won’t be needed.
The second is deleting and immediately re-installing the next day. The pattern matters: declutter, hold for a week, then evaluate. Most re-installs happen on impulse and don’t survive the week.
The third is doing it more often than monthly. Weekly declutters become a maintenance task; monthly is a moment of awareness. The cadence is part of the practice.
A 30-day cycle suggestion
A 90-day cycle, monthly. Success criteria: three monthly declutter sessions completed across the cycle.
Exit condition: when the declutter produces fewer than five deletions for two cycles running. The phone has settled into shape.
